Kobudo training is designed to teach how a weapon can be used as an extension of the body. Most basic karate moves can be duplicated with a weapon in hand. Only learning these basic movements, can weapons training begin. Therefore, kobudo classes stress a lot of basics. The same thrust of a punch to the abdomen, will bring about an entirely different result of the hand holding the Tongfa. While one will hurt or stun, the other will likely kill. With the understanding and respect for any weapon, one can learn how to properly defend oneself against an armed attacker. At The Academy of Martial Arts we study traditional weapons in Meibu-kan Goju-ryu Karate-do. Basic traditional defense techniques taught with a Bo can be duplicated with a pool cue or a broom stick. The ulesi has useful self-defense applications which work well with a umbrella or any short stick.
